Harnessing The Power Of Affirmation

By Brian Sure

Affirmation is not a new method of positive thinking. It is, however, a much-discussed method of value judgment. The formal term actually is New Thought Affirmation. So what is it really? The word affirmation comes from the Latin word affirmare which means to assert. New Thought Affirmation basically works that way: you assert positive notion on a very personal note. In psychology, this is called autosuggestion; or simply put, you let your mind influence the way you act, feel and move. In the case of New Thought Affirmation, you are making your entire being veer into specific but positive things you want to accomplish.

For a number of individuals, mental visualization is usually accompanied by recitations of affirmative actions. You may have heard of people looking at the mirror (or even muttering under their breath) repeating such mantras like, I am doing well today or I am a winner or I am getting that promotion today. For others, affirmation takes effect through written text, where people write down their goals repeatedly to remind themselves of whatever goals they have set up. An example of written affirmation is: I am making a huge step to better my career or I am overcoming my physical ailments or I am making this career change for my future.

In case you haven't noticed, all these affirmative recitations are in the present tense and not in the future tense. All of these start with I because this is a very positive action dedicated to oneself; and it is often accompanied by the word am. The words I am are proving better in effect than the words I will. This is because New Thought Affirmation deals with the situation at hand, and nothing else.

New Thought Affirmation is therefore really harnessing the power of the mind. With all the studies conducted about sheer will power, we all know that we have the potential to do the near impossible things just because we put our minds to it.

So How Can Affirmation Help?

Affirmation offers some individuals a sort of healing from all the negativity around them. By focusing on the positive side of their attitudes, they are able to block out the own negative thoughts and the negative energy around them. This method of positive thinking gives individuals full control of their mental and emotional stability. In a way, they are able to dictate what they should be feeling despite forces that say otherwise. For example, during a very stressful day, a person may have the mantra, "I am doing the right thing." This helps that person keep his or her temper in check while at the same time, performing whatever stressful task is assigned to him or her.

Another great benefit to affirmation is that an individual can override other people's opinion. Some of us do have the tendency to be affected by what we think are other people's perception of us, whether they are real or not. By simply affirming to ourselves that we believe in what we are capable of, we tend to block out everything else.
